Legendary basketball coach John Wooden believed in striving to be the best we can be

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden believed in striving to be the best we can be, not trying to be the best.

Five-time All-Pro lineman Jerry Kramer (Green Bay Packers) wanted to quit football until Vince Lombardi told him he could be the greatest lineman in the NFL. This decision to turn things around was due to his commitment to competitive greatness.

There are 3 concepts behind competitive greatness:

  • BE PREPARED. Perfect the trivial things (singlet straps, jacket zipper, shoelaces). Be proud of those things. Each one brings you closer to competitive greatness, feeds your passion. Passion helps you face the battle without fear.
  • BE DISCIPLINED. Competitive greatness is working hard when no one is watching. Commit yourself to good craftsmanship through discipline. Not because a coach demands it, but because you value it.
  • BE FOCUSED. Focus on your vision and ignore things that may sidetrack you. Vision is the picture of the future that produces passion.

Dig deep, draw out your inner strengths from wherever you keep them hidden. Remember the heroes in your life who embody competitive greatness. Remember the areas in your own life where you use this competitive greatness. Remember that no one achieves this on their own, and use your gifts to imbue competitive greatness in each other.

Wildcat Style consists of three principles that can guide you to success in any area of life you choose. Believe. Compete. Do 1 more. (adapted from Brian Smith's "Tiger Style" from Mizzou Wrestling)

Remember what Aristotle said: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit." Today, be competitive, be resilient, and be excellent.
